How to Deal with Jealousy/How to Make One Jealous - is he trying to get me jealous?

Expert: Anisa - 8/3/2009

Question
Hey Anisa,
I'm 14, and I have this friend who's a guy (we'll call him "Joe") that i've known for years. We used to like each other, and now it's at the point where we're just friends, but we'll always have a soft spot for each other. My mom was talking to his mom, and she said that she thinks he might like me again since he's been talking about me an awful lot at home.

Anyway, i was at a party on friday night with some friends, and we were all in a dark room watching A Haunting in Connecticut. I was sitting with this other boy that I'm begining to like, and he had his arm around me and i was leaning on him and stuff. "Joe" looked back at me once or twice and just stared at me.

A friend of mine (lets call her "Amy")likes him, and she recently told him, but he told her he only liked her as a close friend, and that he liked someone else. I found out earlier today that "Joe" was texting another one of our girl-friends near the end of the party, saying that he was thinking about asking "Amy" out. However, after the party, "Amy" told me to ask "Joe" if he wanted to go to a fair with her, but he said he wished she'd just leave him alone, because he doesn't like her that way and he was starting to feel uncomfortable about it.

I don't know WHAT it's supposed to mean, or WHAT his intentions are, but some of my friends think he's trying to get me jealous or that he's giving up on me because of this new boy?

Answer
Hi Lindsay,

Joe's behavior is very confusing which can be hard to interpret. The fact that he does not like Amy, yet he wants to ask her out, is an indication that he might be doing so just to make you (or someone else) jealous. Either that, or he wants to ask Amy out just so he has someone to keep him company.
