How to Deal with Parents Interfering with Your Relationships - My girlfirends mum is driving us apart

Expert: Jennifer Bailey - 9/9/2009

Question
ok so to not make a long story short, my girlfriend and i have been together for 3 years now im 23 shes 28. Her mum hates me as i am younger than her and she believes i am only with her for now to show off i have an older woman (clearly not the case). The issue is her mum has a strong hold on my girlfriend and as much as i love her i don't know how much crap from her mum i can take i mean 3 years is a long time. To make matters worse my girlfriend is afraid of her mum and wont defend her self or our relationship. am i second guessing our relationship the answer is yes. i have tried talking to her to see what i have done and she simply says im not for her that im young and i can find someone my own age. That i believe is not a reason to hate me. What can i do? Help!!

Answer
Ed,
Your girlfriend needs to stand up for herself and the relationship. As long as she keeps letting her mom interfere, none of her relationships will ever last. I understand that you love her very much, but if she continues to let her Mom in the relationship, you would be better off leaving, because this isn't healthy in any way.

I hope this helps! Anything else, please ask! :)

Best Wishes,
Jen :)
