How to Deal with Parents Interfering with Your Relationships - my girlfriends parents

Expert: Jennifer Bailey - 9/8/2009

Question
My girlfriends mom stopped letting me see my girlfriend after she found out that we was dating. I am 17 and she is too. But I am white and she is mexican. We have been together now a year and a half and her mom stopped letting me see her after we were together six monthsm I used to be liked by her mom and go cook with her and stuuf until she found out. Now she says I am a bad person and that I'm not right or good enough for her daughter. My girlfriend I think is scared to tell her mom that she is going to see me no matter what. Why is her mom and my girlfriend acting like this and what do I do from here.

Answer
Robert,
Your girlfriends Mom may have issues with race or whatever, that shouldn't matter. She may feel the need to "protect" her daughter, out of instinct. Not wanting to let her daughter grow up, and not liking the feeling of not being needed so much by her daughter.
Your girlfriend needs to put her foot downa dn tell her mom that she is growing up and she needs to start dating and if she makes mistakes, she will learn by them.
You should just lay low and go with the flow. You have no control over what your girlfriend decides to do.
Hope this helps!
Best wishes,
Jen
