How to Deal with Sex Problems - Kegels exercises

Expert: John Thai, MD - 5/30/2007

Question
Hello Dr John

I came across this kegel exercise in some health books. I would like to know whether as general knowledge by doing kegels or pubococcygeus (pc) exercises would you have a stronger erection or last longer in bed?

Thank you. Your reply is very much appreciated.

Richard

Answer
Kegel exercises were originally used to prevent or control urinary incontinence in men and women... mostly pregnant women due to poor pelvic musculature. It was discovered to also help with individuals who have products reaching organisms. It will not really help you with having a 'stronger erection.' It will only help you prolong your ability to 'hold' and ejaculate when you want to.

The basic technique to to contract your pelvic floor muscles by stopping the flow of urine while you're urinating. However, improperly doing it can further weaken the pelvic floor muscles, such as having a full bladder. The major problem is urinary tract infections due to withholding and leading to an incomplete emptying of your bladder.

It is in your best interest to talk to your doctor prior to starting the kegel exercise. He/She will teach you the proper technique rather than learning it from a book.

Regards,

John T, MD
