Expert: Jurriaan Plesman Date: 5/15/2008 Subject: Does fluoxetine cause weight gain?
Question Hi,
I was prescribed Lovan/Prozac which contains fluoxetine last year and I was on it for a short period of time. However, recently i have stopped taking it as i am fearful that it will cause weight gain. However, i have started to become more depressed lately. I was diagnosed with anorexia last year as well and was under a lot of stress an depression. The last time i was on Lovan, it helped allievate some of my symptoms of depression and i used to take 1 capsule daily.
I have read that Prozac in the short term can cause weight loss but in the long term is attributed to weight gain. How far is this true and is it more likely that people recover from depression and so gain weight in the process? I would much prefer to take the antidepressant to help me with my mood but i am terrfied it may cause weight gain. Could you help me verify this matter? Thank you.
Answer Dear lilian hoh,
As to side effects of medications it is best to discuss this with your doctor. As Nutritional psychologist i favour treatment by nutritional means.
If side effects of medications are bothering you, I suggest that you ask your doctor to be referred to a Nutritional Doctor or Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist.
