Answer
Hi Louise:

It sounds like you are really bound to the house and that your dad has control of your life. So, it seems you need ways to get out of the house yet you cannot drive and that really limits where you will work, etc.

Since you are 26, you may qualify for some time of financial assistance since you are not working. Here are a few ideas:  Call the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation in your area and ask to talk to a counselor so you can tell them what you are going through. You may get help with a job or further your education with school.  Next call "First call for help" and ask them where you can find a social worker that can help you with your situation, that you want to get out on your own but your dad is controlling everything, you cannot drive, you have no job, etc.  I think "First call for help" may be "211" or "411" - or look it up under the social services section in your phone book.

Also, look up under the social services section in your phone book for any service that you think may help you. Don't feel discouraged if they say you need to come in to fill out forms because this is your opportunity to tell them you have no car, cannot drive, etc and that you need help so you can get out of the house, get your own place, and get a job.

When you talk to a social work, they may suggest counseling for your low self esteem. However, with time, I feel as you work your way out of the house with social services help and get your first apartment, and get a job that your self-esteem will start to climb.

So, I know you are really tired of it all, so this however is a good place to start. Make those phone calls, check up on social services, etc.  You are doing research to help yourself. You already started by writing to me to get some ideas.

Also, sometimes instead of just applying for jobs - just walk into a store that may have a sign in it: "Help wanted" - who knows you may get hired on the spot. Are there stores within walking distance from your house? This may be a good start to get some money because you can walk to work and live at home until you save enough money to get your own apartment.

Hope these ideas help.

Pat
