Dealing with Stress - Constant stomach problem

Expert: James Middleton - 9/22/2009

Question
Hey,
I am 16 years old, and I have has what I think to be is stress-related stomach problems similar to IBS. I have had this for about a year and a half. The pain has been constantly up and down. I am pretty sure that the pain comes from stress from home, mainly my relationship with my father, which I don't think can be fixed and I have to deal with it everyday. My problems include: "pain" in my lower stomach area, fatigue, occasionally unable to control when I go to the bathroom (my body will give me a 10 second warning and then it just lets go), sometimes when I suck in or push out it will make a weird "squishy" sound and hurt, and feeling like a have a deep pit in my stomach. I have tried dicyclomine, and several homeopathic remedies like peppermint oil, etc. but nothing has really helped. Now I just take advil when my stomach hurts (doesn't help either) and visit a psychiatrist every two weeks.

Medication is not really helping, it there anything that you can recommend in tips and/or stress-relief techniques to help me.
(my stomach problem has really affected my social life and my school time!)

Thank you

Answer
Hi Shaul,

With this level of distress at your age, you need to try and fix this as soon as you can.

If you can afford it one of the fastest and most effective tools would be a hypnotherapist who can use either visualization, direct suggestion or some other tools to help you.

A counsellor, or hypnotherapist may be exactly what you need. Within three to six months of regular sessions you could start to be feeling like your old self again.

If you want to speed up the process, then find a quality self hypnosis program and use it on a daily basis. If you need help choosing a program, just let me know and I will try and advise.

I wouldn't worry too much about the physical symptoms - these are just the body telling you exactly how it feels - sick to the stomach; - with the right kind of help your mood and your health and confidence will return - maybe not straight away but certainly within a few months.

Yoga classes, relaxation classes or tai chi should you be able to find these locally may also make a big difference to how you feel in time.

With regards to hypnosis programs there are many good programs on the net, or you may like to look at mine at;

our full range is here at:

I would recommend the Changing emotions/stress management program:

I hope this is helpful, if you need any more help, just contact me again.

Warm regards,

James
