Subject: adding wooden railing to brick porch

Question
What is the best way to design and secure a wooden railing(there is no railing now)to a brick porch? I also need to add a railing to the wooden stairs that are attached to the brick porch with a ledger board. Thanks so much for your help!

Answer
Good afternoon Kathy,
To achieve the most attractive look use 2x4 as a nailer attached to the brick as if it was a half a post (4x4) Attach it by marking where the mortar joints cross the 2x4 as it is held plumb (level) where you want the hand rail to start. You want at least 2 good points of hold.
once you have your marks in the center of the 2x4 drill a 1/2" deep hole with a spade bit that is 5/8" wide. Finish drilling the hole all the way through with a 5/16" bit. Now you will have to have a hammer drill, regular might work just slow.Use a 3/8" concrete masonry bit in the hammer drill and drill through the 2x4 in the holes you have already while the 2x4 is held in the spot you want it attached. Once it goes through and makes a mark in both holes remove the 2x4 and continue drilling the holes through the mortar. Your gonna need 3/8" lag bolts about 3 inches long and washers and the lead anchors that fit the size lag you have. The washers should fit the 5/8" hole you drilled, might get the washers first before you drill and adjust.Once you have the holes drilled insert the lead anchors, might have to tap them in easy with a hammer, hold the 2x4 back up and insert the lags start both of them a little before tightening them all the way. Again a impact wrench works best or use a drill. Socket set might work.
once this board is in place you can now attach the rails and everything will be solid. Hope this helped.
