Decks/Wood posts replacement

Question
Hi Mark,
I am having some posts replaced due to rot. Could you tell me what type of post base to use for a 8 foot long wood balcony post?  On the Lowes website I saw some that were specked out as light duty, but can't find heavy duty ones. Your recommendation?  Also there is just one bolt at the top of each post, is that sufficient?

Thanks so much for your help

T.

Answer
I would use 6"X 6" post's, either green treated for ground contact, or cedar posts. I would also use Simpson strong tie post base bracket's on the bottom so the post is 1" off the ground. Simpson strong tie also makes fasteners for the top of the post. Their is also a framing handbook on-line called thr DCA-6 if you google this you will see illustrations.

Have a great day
Mark
