Question
How do I update the look of a red fireplace brick that has gold splatter accents. I prefer not ton use white paint. The brick in front of the fireplace  is flat(not raised.Do I need to remove the gold accents prior to painting. The fireplace has a two-tier brick 'shelves' that jut out from the fireplace above the firebox. Is there a clever way to change the look without removing the bricks?

Answer
Hi Judith,
This question is a little out of my depth :) but I did some research and found the following websites for you to consider. They'll likely be of more help to you. Just copy and paste them into your browser. If you want to explore more type "painting fireplace brick" into google or your favorite engine. One of the sites I found suggested a cream colour. I don't think you'd need to remove the gold first, you can likely paint over it. Sorry I couldn't be more help :)
