I take pride in assisting people with virtually every aspect of making their homes more comfortable and livable on a budget! As an advisor and decorator, I have assisted many do-it-yourselfers in the quest for developing their own unique home style.
Experience College, advertising, public relations, marketing, free-lance writing and a plethora of creative endeavors have led me here. A stint at a law firm taught me humility too, but I really never scratched the creative itch until I became an Interior Decorator. Some three thousand questions ago, I wondered if I could really help. I think now that I am, and it feels great to give something back.
I am trying to decorate my living room. I am renting the house and it has blue carpet in the living room. :( I have a new sofa and loveseat, which I love, in a crimson red. (I bought them last year, thinking I would be moving out of here soon, but it looks like I will be staying here for at least another year.)
I guess my style is transitional. I will be painting the walls a creamy sand color, white trim, with espresso furniture. I also just bought a great rug with red, brown, and sand to put in the seating area, to help hide some of the carpet. I think it will look better if the red sofa is not directly on the blue carpet.
I had originally just planned to decorate, and ignore the blue carpet completely. But, now I'm thinking I should embrace it and add some blue accents to help tie it all together. I'm thinking of doing a really pale blue, since the red is a deep red. I can have a few items (like lamp bases, candle holders, vases, etc) in the blue shade, and have some blue in the fabrics. I'm mostly concerned with the cushions. What color cushions do you think I should have? Should I go with the brown? Or maybe a print/stripe with blue in it? What material/pattern? I have no idea! Also, how many blue accent pieces do you think I should use, in order to tie in the carpet color?
Any other advice is greatly appreciated!! :)
Thanks so much,
Melissa
Answer Hi Melissa,
Embracing the blue carpet is a noble gesture and not a bad idea, but I'd opt to cover as much of it as possible with an area rug in a neutral shade. Even a room-sized rug from your local home improvement store will be an economical fix. A year's worth of pleasure is worth that investment.
I love the idea of mixing a chocolate brown/espresso with the red. I also agree that painting the walls a more neutral color will go a long way to putting the room together. Consider a taupe or khaki with white trim.
If you've already purchased the rug with the three colors in it, use that to disguise the carpet. You'll be glad you did.
