Decorating & Furniture/Basement decoratring

Hello!! I am writing to ask a couple of decorating questions. First of all, I have a deep red/maroon colored basement with golden oak trim and off white carpeting. The centerpiece of the room is the white marble fireplace. We have a taupe colored couch and a neutral stone coffee table. I have a striped multi colored rug that will be in front of the fireplace which I would like to base my decorating around. I have included pictures so you have a better idea of what I am working with. I like modern/contemporary style. I would like to put a painting on the mantle but am not sure what to put up that won't clash with the rug. I had one up there before and it just looked too "busy" Any style or color suggestions for a painting? Also, I am not sure what colors to work with from the rug that would work best with the neutral style of the couch and table. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!  Also, do you know of any websites that have picture ideas for modern style decorating?

The best image you could use above the fireplace is a simple one.  If you like abstracts, look for something more "solid" and less busy.  Keep the frame simple and with straight lines.  Pull the color to the furniture with a few select throw pillows, and consider adding a spot light or two for the art.  You may want to consider a black and white, but a modern canvas is probably your best alternative.

Visit, (Better Homes & Gardens),, for inspiration and ideas.

Lastly, while the child's picture is sweet, its size is best for either a smaller wall (it's out of scale with the one it hangs on) or should be put in a stand-up frame.

Visit my web site at: Decor: I've written about it, planned it, designed it and colored it, and I've never stopped loving it. It's not what you spend, or who made it, it's how it makes you feel.

College, advertising, public relations, marketing, free-lance writing and a plethora of creative endeavors have led me here. As an entrepreneur in decorative product design, I learned the hard way how tough it can be to be in business for yourself. A stint at a law firm taught me humility too. Some three thousand questions ago, I wondered if I could really help. Obviously, I'm still here and still taking your questions. God Bless You!
