Decorating & Furniture/Colour Coordination

We just built a townhouse.  I don't know what colour furniture to buy for our living room.  the carpet is a deep charcoal and the walls a medium grey.  We have one sofa that is a reddish brown.  We still want to buy a love seat and two recliners - what colors should we go with to match our existing sofa and the surrounding colours?

Hello Michelle,
I recommend you take a look at upholstered furniture and use the fabric selected to highlight the room's base tones. The charcoal and medium greys become the neutral color once you layer on additional colors and patterns.

For a traditional look:  Add additional color tones such as claret, cream, gold-tones and greens to add excitement and richness.  For an Asian theme, you can bring vibrancy into the room with special details and accent pieces.

For a contemporary look:  Add creams, reds, whites, blacks, greens, purples, with silver and other metallic accents.  There are some wonderfully stylish and minimalist designer coffee tables and sofa tables available.

Your best bet:  Take a visit to the nearest Pier One or West Elm furniture stores for a multitude of design ideas which may work well with your taste and also just about anyone's budget.

Good Luck to you!
