Decorating & Furniture/Using light and dark wood in the same room

We are moving into a new home and the kitchen, breakfast nook and family room are all connected.  The kitchen has honey colored cabinets.  The furniture we like for the breakfast nook and family room is a dark wood with some red in it.  Can we use dark wood even though the kitchen is in the same line of sight and is a lighter wood?

Hello Amanda,
It may seem at odds but yes!  By adding darker wood accents to the exising kitchen you CAN connect the rooms.

Do you have an open soffit above the kitchen cabinets?  If so, there you can add medium to dark tones of woven baskets and other wood accents.'re not really trying to MATCH the wood exactly that's in the living area, instead select attractive wood tones and design a montage of various wood accents.  This way, you're deliberately using woods as a focal point.

There are so many gorgeous wood accessories that work both for the kitchen and entire house, you should have a great selection to choose from.

Tip:  Select a gorgeous cutting board that has a cross grain cut and is made from multi-colored wood as a first purchase in your new wood accessory collection!

Good Luck!
