Decorating & Furniture/which direction to lay wooden floor

Hi, I have an open plan, downstairs space that we are about to put a wooden floor on to.  The entire room is 70 ft long and 13ft wide so quite narrow and I was wondering if I lay the flooring across the width would this give the illusion of it being wider or at least stop the room looking very long and narrow.

Dear Kate Miles,
Please go to this link to see images.

In the above link I have drawn up examples of how the room would look if you were to place the flooring horizontal or vertical. I would place them so they start from one short wall to the next because this will look more balanced and wider. Hope these images and information helps. Good Luck!
