Decorating & Furniture/painting

Question
Hi Jenny.
I have a small dining room, its about 10 ft by 11 ft with 9 ft ceilings and it has oak trim. I wanted to paint stripes on the walls...the color alternating between a flat and glossy. I was wondering if I should paint horizontal stripes or vertical stripes to make the room look bigger. Also, what would be a good color.
My living room is a moss green and my kitchen is a very light butter yellow.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Reshma

Answer
Thanks for writing and for your questions.  Since your adjoining rooms are green and yellow, I'd select my favorite of those two and use it in the dining area.  Horizontal stripes will visually enlarge the space from side to side...vertical will visually enlarge the space from top to bottom.

Regards,
Jenny
