Decorating & Furniture/refinishing pine slat walls and cabinetry

Question
I recently inherited my childhood home.  The entire den, one wall of the living room, and all the kitchen cabinetry is made of varnished pine that has turned orangeish over the years.  Can this be painted over, or must it be stripped to the bare wood first?  This would be a monumental task as even the ceiling in the den is of this material.

Answer
Sam:

well sam that is up to you what you want to do with this wood weather paint color or stain color if u are staining then you need to strip and start fresh for best results if you are painting at least sand lightly and apply paint to you are happy with color.
Thanks
Jean
