Question I purchased an oil painting that has a plaster frame and painted black. The corner has chipped and is showing the white plaster underneath. How do I repair this? Do I build it up with powder plaster or can it be done with a venetian liquid. When I paint it, will I have to use an acrylic paint or a special kind of paint
Answer Hi Tina
Nice to hear from you.
The answer to this questionn depends on the painting.
If this is a valuable painting you purchased in the original frame, then let a pro do the repair.
If its not, then use a filler like poly-fil.
All it really is, is a drywall compound in a tube already mixed. Easy to use.
The plaster you mention is OK too but harder to use.
Simply fill the chip and while the plaster is wet use whatever tool needed to roughly mimic the other corners.
After its painted the repair will not show. Its fool the eye really.
All I have ever used is acrylic paint but you may have to top coat with a clear coat in whatever sheen the rest of the frame has.
Good Luck
