About Eileen Cronk
Expertise
If you are decorating your home on a budget I can answer most questions about what to look for when buying "good old stuff" at garage sales, yard sales or auctions. I can answer most questions about the refinishing, and repairing of wood items. I have had lots of experience in this area and made lots of mistakes over the years which I may help you avoid.

Experience
I have been haunting auction sales, flea markets etc. for 30 yrs. I have worked extensively at refinishing, and repairing all the old stuff I bring home. I also work for other people, and do repairs and refinishing for several antique stores.

Subject: sealing old cake carrier

Question
Do you have experience with painting over baked on enamel over metal?  I have an old 3 tier cake carrier made of metal with baked on enamel.  I used deglosser and 0000 steel wool to make it easier for the oil based primer I sprayed on it to adhere.  Then I sprayed it with a satin oil based enamel in the color desired color, and painted a design on it with acrylic (latex?) craft paint.  What do I use to seal it? - an oil based or water based polyurethane?  Something else? (The design was intricate and I'd never want to re-do it.)  Help!

Answer
Hi Beverly
Nice to hear from you.
Oh boy..this is a problem.
If you use an oil based sealer it will yellow the artwork over time.
It may even smear it when applied.
If you use water based sealer it will not yellow but will not stick on the oil based paint.
SO...LOL...First do this test.
Apply some of the oil based enamel you used on a "test subject"..a glass jar is fine.
Then do a bit of art work on it with your craft paint.
Seal with a spray can of clear lacquer.
Leave for a day and see if its OK before trying on your cake carrier.
TEST TEST.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen
