Question I have 2 gold picture frames I receieved from my grandmother. (I think they have gold leafing on them) These frames are the perfect size but I do not like the gold. Is there any way I can turn the gold frame into a silver frame, maybe something that looks old, but silver. I hope you can help, if not should I take it somewhere to get refinished?
Thanks!
Lauren
Answer Hi Lauren
Nice to hear from you.
No need to take the frames anywhere. You can do this simple project yourself.
Dust the frame.
Get a can of silver spray paint at the hardware.
Remove any glass or pictures.
Spray the frames.
Let dry well.
Then go to your local craft store.
Get a bottle of black antique gel. The gel is the same size as our regular craft paints.
If the frames are large, paint one side at a time with the gel. If they are small you can slap on a coat over the whole frame. When I say slap on thats about all you need do. No careful painting required for this just cover the whole frame working fast.
Then while the black is still wet, rub it off with rags. You will see the black stays in the indents and crevices and gives an old silver look.
How much or how little you rub off depends on your taste.
If by chance the craft store does not sell black antique gel, you can make your own using clear glaze and black craft paint mixed together about half and half but you can experiment a bit with the mix. You may want 3/4 glaze to 1/4 black. It just depends on the products you buy.
Great Question

Eileen
