Dentistry/what if I postpone my root canal to two months

Question
Hi doctor,
My friend is experiencing a severe pain in her tooth and went to see a
dentist. The dentist recommended her a root canal and given her some pain
killers and Amoxycillin capsules 500mg. But my friend wants to do the root
canal in her home town in two months. What are the consequences of
postponing the root canal treatment? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Niroshi,

The Amoxicillin will help alleviate the pain, but it won't get rid of the infection. She needs to have the root canal done as soon as possible.

Waiting can mean that the infection will get larger and spread. In addition, the tooth will get weaker and may start breaking down. I would suggest at least starting the root canal now, and getting the bulk of the bacteria out of the tooth. At least that way, the bacterial count has been diminished and the tooth has a better chance of lasting.

Please let me know if you need more help.
