Dentistry/sensitive filling

Question
Hi Tony. I have recently had a filling replaced from amalgam to a white filling. It was done about 2 months ago. Not long after having the filling replaced I began experiencing a 'popping' sensation in that tooth. It is not painful but it does have a slight ache sometimes. I have just been to the dentist and she did not understand my description of a 'popping sensation' (this might just be because she is a polish dentist however) which was not very reassuring, and she said she would need to remove the filling and see if I need a root canal treatment. She tested it with a swab to see if my tooth was sensitive to cold and it was. Obviously I am not to keen on that idea and not really sure if that would be the best option. What is your view?
I also spoke to another dentist and he seemed to think that it was just my filling that had not set correctly.

I am really anxious about getting root canal treatment and just wanted a second opinion before I agree to anything.

Many thanks, Hannah

Answer
Hi Hannah

It is not uncommon to get sensitivity such as this following a filling, and yes, it is a possibility that the filling material did not set fully.

As the tooth responded to cold, it is unlikely to need a root filling.  What could be done is to have the filling removed and a sedative temporary filling placed.  Then a week or so later, provided the symptoms have settled, have a new permanent filling placed.
