Dentistry/temporary crowns over two adjacent teeth

Question
I have temporary crowns over two adjacent molars on my lower right jaw.  The temporary crown appears to be two crowns on the outside (cheek) and one on the inside (tongue).  I know it is one crown, because the dentist only put one on.  I would have noticed him fitting two.  Anyway, I have had severe pain for about 11 days, getting worse each day and waking me up at night throbbing.  The crown is cemented on, according to my dentist, so he will have to numb me up and cut it off.  Is the pressure from the crown pressing on the two teeth together causing my pain?  I've never heard of a crown going over two teeth.
My dentist doesn't work on Fridays or I'd be in the chair today!

Answer
Dear Kris:
Sorry to hear about your problem.  And, yes, there is a problem with the temporary crowns.  If they are not shaped properly in a biologically acceptable manner, you will have severe pain from the gums, mainly because you cannot brush the area and remove the plaque.
It is very important that you have those temporary crowns removed and the area cleaned up.  I'm sorry that I could not answer your e-mail yesterday, but here is what you should do...
1.  Take some motrin (ibuprofen) two tablets (200mg each) three times a day to stop the swelling and the pain.
2.  Brush as well as you can and rinse with warm water and baking soda (one tea-spoon in 8oz glass).
3.  Go to your dentist to get the area looked at.
4.  If you do not trust your dentist, go to www.prosthodontics.org and look up a Prosthodontist (the specialist in restorative, cosmetic, and implant dentistry) in your area and go for a consultation to look at the work.
Best wishes and a speedy recovery,
