Dentistry/Braces & moving teeth

Question
Hi!
I used to wear braces (from the time I was 9 to the time I was about 13). My teeth were awful - they were twisted and turned into all sorts of terrible positions. The braces really helped to smooth things out. Recently, however, I've noticed my bottom teeth crowding - they're definitely not straight anymore. This morning I noticed my upper right eye tooth was sticking out more than I remember it doing. Overall, my whole smile looks different than it did when the braces came off. The only major thing I've had done since then was to have all 4 wisdom teeth out (due to impaction). My teeth aren't great - I've got a few cavities. Can I do anything to prevent them from shifting more? Might something be causing this? I spoke to my denstist and he said it was totally normal...but why would it happen so many years (4) after getting my wisdom teeth out? Any help would be amazing. Thanks SO much.

Answer
As you age and mature there are changes that occur with the musculature that can affect the alignment of the teeth.  As the bite continues to settle and deepen there is pressure on the lower front teeth especially and that can result in crowding.  The teeth can often be realigned and then retained using Invisalign, a system that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten the teeth.  You can read more about this at www.invisalign.com
