Dentistry/Child's permenant tooth has desolved away!

Question
Please help - I was totally unprepared for what happened last Friday, and am in total shock!
My 7 year old daughter appears to have lost one of her adult teeth (Lower, right, lateral incisor). We checked, and she definitely lost that primary tooth in August 2007 (over a year ago)! The tooth which grew in its place however had been developing very slowly, now that I think about it, but we just figured that it would catch up eventually? But now it's gone!
I have kept the tooth, and it appears to have been practically dissolved away - with only a thin crown remaining!
She hasn't received any major trauma to that area and otherwise has very nice healthy dentition. I have made an appointment to see a dentist - but that appointment is over 2 weeks away. My daughter appears unconcerned about it, and I have been careful to pass it off as normal - but inside I am blaming myself for not having spotted anything unusual was going on!
Have you ever heard of this phenomena?
What could possibly have caused something as terrible as this to happen to our little girl for no apparent reason?
Kind regards - Sy.

Answer
I must say that you've described the appearance of a baby tooth that has fallen out quite normally.  I wouldn't be surprised if an x-ray showed four normally developing permanent incisors under the gum.  If not, then you've described a very unusual situation.  In either case there's nothing you should do, including blaming yourself, since there's nothing that can be done until the dentist can see your daughter in two weeks.

Expertise

Please limit your inquiry to questions about orthodontics (braces) and children's dentistry. I am both an Orthodontist and a Pediatric Dentist, having been trained in both of these dental specialty fields. Orthodontics is the dental specialty that treats problems of tooth, bite and jaw alignment using braces and removable appliances. Pediatric Dentistry is the dental specialty also known as dentistry for children, which deals specifically with the dental problems of this special age group from infants to adolescents. I am also experienced in Forensic Dentistry, the application of dentistry to law enforcement and identification using dental records.

I have been in the private practice of orthodontics and pediatric dentistry for over 20 years. Prior to that I served for three years on the Cleft Palate and Cranio-facial Reconstruction team at Children''s Hospital of Philadelphia and was an Assistant Professor of Dentistry at University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. I also served as a dentist in the U.S.Air Force, stationed at Andrews AFB in Washington, DC.
