Dentistry/Cutting teeth

Question
I'm 26yrs old and I still have three baby teeth.  My canine (baby) tooth is currently loose and the adult canine is coming in, but slowly.  Can I go to a regular dentist to have my tooth pulled and gum cut to allow the tooth to come in properly or should I visit a specialist?

Answer
Dear Raquel:
I would love to say yes... however, the problem is that you do not know the extent of knowledge, experience, or skill of the general dentist.  Some are excellent, most are average or below.  Most top students in dental school (about 20%) go on to become specialists, so you are left with the rest of the class to deal with.  I do know several absolutely excellent general dentists, but are you willing to take chances?  Since your problem is not that common, I would suggest the following:
1. Locate a Prosthodontist near you.  The Prosthodontist is the specialist in restorative, cosmetic, and implant dentistry. www.prosthodontics.org will have the link to locating a Prosthodontist near you.
2.  Since the Prosthodontist usually deal with the top-end and the most difficult treatment plans, ask the Prosthontist to refer you to an orthodontist of his/her choice.  The chances that the Prosthodontist would know the best suited Orthodontist are much better than if you go and locate one yourself.  Some Orthodontists specialize in braces for adults, ant that would be the most suitable person for you to see.  www.braces.org will have a link to locating an orthodontist if you chose to do it yourself.
If you still have a problem, please do not hesitate to give me a call a the office, and I'll gladly recommend a colleague.
Best of luck,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
