Question
I developed pain in my front right tooth last Friday and could not get into my dentist until Sunday when an abscess was diagnosed.  They started me on antibiotics, but by the time I went to my dentist on Monday it had turned into cellulite and they could not treat me.  My condition deteriorated and my Dr. admitted me to hospital Tuesday evening where I received intravenous antibiotics.  I was operated on on Wednesday when they removed I'm of nastiness from by face and left a drain in, which was removed yesterday morning and was discharged in the evening with a mountain of antibiotics which I am still taking.   My face and eyes are slowly returning to normal although my mouth has lost movement, I am led to believe this will be transitory. I am, however, concerned that my front tooth is still sore when tapped, is this the original abscess that may not have fully cleared, or is it possible for it deteriorate even though I'm still taking antibiotics?  I have a dental appointment with my own dentist on Tuesday, but it is unlikely they will be able to work on me until my mouth recovers.  Am I panicking unduly?

Answer
Hi Pamela,

I'm sorry to hear all this is going on. WOW...you have had a tough time. I don't blame you for being concerned.

The reason your front tooth is still tender is that nothing has been done to it to open into it and start removing the dead tissue. The antibiotics have your overall infection under control, but the tooth needs more treatment. It is possible that things could flare up again, but it is highly unlikely. Once your dentist can open into the tooth, things will improve quickly. Hopefully that can happen Tuesday. In the meantime, continue with your antibiotics and I think you will continue to see the swelling go down and remain comfortable.

I hope this helps.
