Question
what effect does the intraoral & extraoral application of heat & cold have on an oral abscess. Between Warm Saline rinse and Cold plain water rinse, which one is recommended in the above condition and why? what is the best line of treatment in oral abscess condition?

Answer
Hi Ranu,

When dealing with a dental abscess, it is never a good idea to use cold in or out of the mouth. The reason is that cold slows blood flow to the area so the defensive cells of the body are kept from getting to the source of the infection. Warm is much better as it speeds up blood flow. Warm may make the swelling worse, but in the long run, is a much better choice for ultimate healing.

Hope this helps.
