Dentistry/Partial dentures?

Question
Dear Dr Appleton

I have recently lost a tooth at the front and had a partial denture on the NHS. I had this for several months but could not get on with this "Plate" (didn't like it covering the roof of my mouth) and stopped using it.
I went to a private Dentist who advised either an implant or a Chrome denture.

I had a look on the web and came across a short article about Valplast flexible dentures. Unfortunately I cannot find any other details and would like an expert opinion on the best way forward please.

Regards

Bob

Answer
Hi Bob

Valplast dentures are similar to the NHS acrylic denture you had in that they will cover the same amount of your palate.  The difference is that the material is flexible rather than rigid, so it is more comfortable.

A chrome denture is held in place by clipping onto some of your teeth.  consequently it doesn't cover your palate in the same way and is much more secure.  There may, however, be clips visible.

An implant would be the very best treatment as it is the most lifelike.

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
