Dentistry/Root canal vs. implant

Question
What is the difference between root canal and tooth implant?
Are they expensive?

Answer
Endodontic therapy, commonly called a "root canal", involves removing damaged or dead tissue from inside the root of the tooth, allowing you to retain the tooth. An implant involves removing the tooth and replacing it with a metal "screw". Obviously the former is preferable, but sometimes the tooth is so badly damaged that it cannot be saved. In this case, an implant is a nice alternative to have. Endodontic therapy is less expensive than having an implant placed, and less risky. In general, success is approximately equivalent for both procedures.
