Question
I had a root canal on my lower front incisor almost 7 months ago. I noticed today it was chipped. It is porcelin, I think. Is this normal, and do I have to pay for repair? I haven't even finished paying off the first procedure, i am on disabilty. Do I have any rights, before I go back to the dentist. i would like to have some information. It was a 2 root tooth and I paid 2100. Thank you in advance.

Answer
Dear Reg:
It is common enough for porcelain to fracture, especially if the root canal treatment was done through an existing crown.  From your description, I do not know whether the crown was made following the root canal, or prior to it.
You do have certain rights.  There is some "good will" associated with any dental work.  Any dentist will stand by their work for at least a short period of time, but that varies.  The best advice that I can give you is to communicate with your dentist in a non-confrontational manner.  Most dentists want to do well by their patients.
Call your dentist and talk to him/her.  I'm sure that he/she will want to help you.
Best wishes,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
