Dentistry/lengthening for a crown.

Question
A crown lengthening was done on #3 and #5, in prep for crowns. A flap was laid across #4, which has a crown. #4 was totally protected by the gum and in good condition, prior to this surgery. Now 8 weeks post op, the gum line over #4 has receded greatly exposing the root on that tooth. I am being told that this is OK and that all I have to do is keep the area clean! I feel that the crown on #4 needs to be replaced so that the tooth is once again protected.  Please advise ASAP.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi CJ,

Crown lengthening (CL) is the process of removing gum tissue and the underlying bone to make the tooth longer. This then gives the restorative dentist space to make a crown for the tooth to fit onto.

One of the effects of the CL procedure, is that the gum over the adjacent teeth may be shortened.  However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

As long as the tooth is not sensitive, there is no need to redo the crown on #4. However, it is important to keep the area clean.

Before the procedure was performed, the doctor should have informed you about this adverse effect. However, no treatment is needed in most cases.

Please let me know if you need more help.
