Question
I am a 60 female in reasonable health. I have always cared for my teethe and had regular checkes and treamtnet as necessary. Over the last few months my two upper canines have moved apart by several mm and I now notice that other teeth on the right side of my upper jaw appear to be moving. On my last visited to the dentist he remarked on the movement of the canines. there is no evidence of infection of inflammation,no pain and no alteration in the colour of the teeth that I can determine. Could you hazard a guess as to the cause and whether there is anything that could be done to prevent further movement .

Answer
Hi Fran

This sounds very much like you have periodontal disease. This is a slowly developing condition of the gums and jaw bones whereby you lose some of the bone support of your teeth.  It is generally a painless condition and you need to talk to your dentist about it and treatment options.

Expertise

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

Experience

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
