Dentistry/overbite and eye muscle spasms

Question
I had four crowns on my front teeth and my canines veneered. The crowns hit my lower front teeth so my dentist recomended I wear an orthodontic appliance to push my lower teeth back. Eventually my whole bite was off resulting in the dentist adjusting my bite over 30 times which led to the tips being taken off most of my molars and a severe shortening of my six front upper and lower front teeth. I had a full mouth with no wrinkes around my lips, but now my whole mouth sags inward and my eyes hang down. I have severe muscle spasms on one side of my mouth (the side that was shortened the most)and spasms of the muscles around my eyes (not just eylelid spasms but all around the eyes). I feel that I am overclosing everywhere and look a bit like someone with dentures who has taken them out.

I saw a new dentist who said I might need a complete restoration of my teeth. I saw another dentist who thought I might just need the top arch crowned. I saw a third dentist who suggested I see an orthodontist and possibly do some crowns afterward. I stressed that I was going out of my mind with spasms and discomfort, but the orthodontist assured me that he could fix everything and would lenghten my teeth orthodontically. It has been 14 months and I am no better. My whole face is in constant pain and I have spasms all over the face especially around the eyes. I believe this is because I had a forward thrusting bite with good support from long teeth. Now everything is unsupported had my eye and cheek muscles are working overtime. I don't know what to do. My teeth are spaced apart or I would just take off the braces and have the crowns. Any suggestions or comments?

Answer
Dear Sherry:  I wish I could help.  But at this stage, your case is way to complex to help from this distance.  I would need you here (South Florida), and your case would likely require handling by both my orthodontist and myself putting our heads together, along with you and your history and your thoughts, to determine what might be the best methods to provide the best result for you.  If you cannot come down, I might be able to provide you with some names of dentists who might be able to help you in your area.  I don't know all dentists, but I do know some.  Sorry I couldn't help more.  dd

Experience

Having attained over 30 years of clinical experience in private practice in Michigan, in 2001 I was re-certified by taking and passing the Florida State Dental Board Examination. After moving to Florida, I spent nearly 10 years re-honing my skills while working as an Associate Dentist for several large dental groups. I am certified in placement of Mini Dental Implants, and I am Director of The Florida Implant Center (floridaimplantcenter.com). Over my career lifetime, I have provided thousands of diagnoses, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, periodontal treatments, TMJ therapies, partials, dentures and extractions, and dozens of implants for my patients. The only aspect of dentistry with which I have very little experience is orthodontics.
