Dentistry/re: root canal and high blood pressure

Question
Hi,

I had a root canal 1 day ago after experiencing about 3 weeks of pain that became unbearable until the procedure. I have had a root canal before with no problems, however, yesterday after the numbness wore off I did experience more pain, so I took Advil as directed by me endodontist.  So the problem occurred today, when I saw my doctor for a check up and my blood pressure was 147/90.  I have never had my blood pressure greater than 110/70 - it is usually on the low side.  I am experiencing a dull throbbing headache and feel anxious.  Can the numbing agent used cause this or is this caused from an infection?  I was not prescribed an antibiotic.  thanks - Anna

Answer
Dear Anna,

As long as you have no worsening swelling(a symptom of possible worsening infection) then over the next week the tooth will most likely feel better.

I do not believe that your increased blood pressure is directly caused by your root canal. It is not uncommon to have some discomfort after a root canal treatment.  Advil does help.

The anesthetic is not likely to cause an increase in your blood pressure after it wears off and I do not believe it is related to an infection.

Most likely your increased blood pressure has something to do with the pain and anxiety that you are experiencing. Both can cause your blood pressure to go up. I suggest you try not to worry and continue to take your advil as needed.

I hope I have answered your question please feel free to contact me again with your future dental questions.
