Dentistry/swollen glands afther the dentist

Question
Hi, I am concerned. I had some twinges in my third molar from the back on the right side so went for xrays. My dentist I needed a crown and possibly a root canal on the too the behind the tooth that was bothering me. and also possibly a crown on the one that was bothering me. It was very expensive. I went for a second opinion. The current dentist tole me he felt the crown definitly need to be done
on the same tooth the previous dentist said. ( one in front of wisdom tooth.  So he gave me the shot in my cheek above the tooth. It was quite a long drilling process. when it was done, and it thawed out the whole side of that jaw hurt. the next day there was creeping nerve like pain in the back of that right side of the jaw where the work was done and also in the maxilla on the left. the pain continued I could not eat at all on that side.  This went on for a week.I called he said we would know if I need a root canal unless I had a persistent pain right above tooth. He also said perhaps the temp was a bit high. I didn't think so, so kept going . got some acupuncture which greatly helped.  Then went to get my permanent tooth put on. He numbed me to do it. It felt like better fit.  However the next next day all the glands on the left side of my neck were swollen up and painful even ones close to my adams apple and thyroid. the pain is much less perhaps because the tooth fits better. But why now the swollen glands????? The crown is only on with temporary cement incase I do need a root canal. All the original twinging has gone......Should I get antibiotics. was I allergic to the shot. Why more swelling after the permanent crown visit? Who can diognose what I need at this point?
thank you for your help

Answer
Dear Diana:  It sounds like you have an infection on your left side.  Likely from that tooth.  I doubt that you have an allergy to local anesthetic.  Your dentist should be able to tell you.  If you are still not sure, you should ask for a referral to an oral surgeon or an endodontist.  Good luck.  dd
