Question
At the age of 17, in 1962, I had my 6 upper front teeth removed in surgery at a hospital in Massachusetts. The bone appears to have been "cut back" on one side more than on the other. I have been wearing a plate for the past 46 years. My question to you is: Do you have any idea what may have been wrong with my gums to warrant removal of those 6 teeth? When I look at photos of myself at 17, before  the teeth were removed, they looked fine. I also do not recall any pain issues with my mouth or teeth.I just don't know what the reason may have been to have these teeth removed. Thanks, Madge

Answer
Dear Madge:
I am so sorry that you have had to deal with a denture for so many year.  I am even more sorry that I cannot help you at all.
The only thing that can be done, is a proper, comprehensive clinical exam with x-rays.  Also looking at old pictures.  It might be possible to attempt to figure out the reason for the removal of the teeth, but it is very hard.
www.prosthodontics.org is the website for the American College of Prosthodontists.  It will have a link to a Prosthodontist, specialist in reconstructive, cosmetic, and implant dentistry.  Part of out training involves the science of the biology of tooth loss.  A Prosthodontist will be the most qualified person to look at your situation and try and play detective.
I wish you luck in your endeavor,
