Dentistry/tooth broken below gum line

Question
I have a tooth that I felt break this morning, it was very loose and every time it was touched it bled and was very painful. I pulled the broken tooth out and the root is left under the gum line and it is very painful, what should I do until I can get to a denist on monday

Answer
Dear Mary Jo:
Unfortunately, there is not much that you can do, except take some motrin (available over the counter).  I do not have any information about you or the tooth that broke, and thus cannot really advise you about treatment.  However, all that I can say is that there are dentists who work on Saturday and would be more than happy to see you.  If you can hold off and wait for your regular dentist until Monday, than that is better.
I wish you luck and am sorry that I cannot do more to help you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
