Dentistry/tooth removal

Question
Hi there,
I have a huge fear of the dentist - i haven't been since i was about 14 when i was there i was "put asleep" although i was awake and felt pain during the whole thing - just couldn't physically move - now i'm 23, i have what i believe is two broken wisdom teeth - i'm not a dentist but i'm pretty sure they need to be removed, the pain can keep me awake for days at a time. the teeth are so broken that my gum is level with the tooth - i can feel a huge hole in both with my tongue and they are sharp to the touch.
i'm obviously not registered with a dentist, the whole thing frightens me like a horror movie. how long do you think it would take from registering at a dentist, seeing him, telling me what i already know (teeth removed) to having them removed?
i NEED to be asleep, totally knocked out this time is this possible, i REALLY don't want to have this done - but it's got to be - i just want it done as fast and as painless as possible.
any help will be greatly received,
Katie

Answer
Hi Katie

You need to go and see a dentist and to discuss your fears with them.  They will be able to ensure you receive appropriate treatment to get rid of your pain and calm your anxiety.

I don't know how long it will take - but just take the first step - go and see a dentist.

Expertise

I am an experienced general dental practitioner in private dental practice. I have worked for the past 25 or so years in the UK, and own a busy practice in Stratford upon Avon, Stratford Dental. From early 2012 my wife and I moved to Canberra, Australia, where I have taken up the position of Lead Dentist in a large city-centre practice. I will happily answer questions related to general practice, and have interests in endodontics (root canal), dental implants, CEREC/E4D cad-cam dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

Experience

I have been a general dental practitioner for over 25 years, working initially under the NHS, but since 2001 have been solely in private practice. I run a busy practice with my wife, Lisa, who is also a dentist. I have also been closely involved in the training of young dentists, and have lectured to dentists on a variety of subjects, both clinical and managerial, related to general dental practice.
