Question I am a pharmacy student in need of a root canal, but I cannot afford it. I do not want to lose the tooth. I had a tem filling placed in it a year ago and it has been fine until recently. I was in extreme pain and a saw a general practitioner who referred me to an endodontist. The gen practitioner gave me Pen VK which actually alleviated symptoms for a week. My question is are there any other antibiotics which penetrate to the relevant areas more effectively than Pen VK? How about Biaxen? My goal is to delay the root canal for a year until I graduate school. Any advice appreciated as I'm taking 1 g Tylenol qid and 800 mg ibuprofen tid and I don't want my liver to fall out.

i hate to say it but there is no way this can be put off for a year. any antibiotic will only give temporary relief. penvk is a good one. biaxin is not any better. i would ask if you can do the work and make payments for it. or if you are by a dental school, have it done there...will cost a lot less. i wish i had other ideas for you but i do not. you can try a different antibiotic such as clindamycin or a z-pack. but again, it will only give you temporary relief.
