About Steven C. Scherr, D.D.S.
Expertise
Comprehensive Dentistry, TMJ Dysfunction Therapy, and Cosmetic Dentistry. Nineteen years of experience including hospital residency (Sinai Hospital of Baltimore), and training at the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education. Currently in private rehabilitative practice.

Experience
I was the Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland Dental School in 1981. I served as a General Practice Resident at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 1981-82, and have been in private dental practice since that time. My practice is now located in Owings Mills, MD, a suburb of Baltimore. My studies at The L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Florida has enriched my practice and my patients. It was there that I learned the true meaning of excellence.

Subject: burnt gums

Question
I attempted to whiten my teeth with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide 12% and baking soda as advised by numbers sites as a sure "cheaper" way to get my teeth whiter.
After applying the solution to my teeth I felt my gums burn like never before so I quickly rinsed and decided that I would rather have ivory color teeth than go through that pain again. Unfortunately now, little parts of my gums are flaking off (it appears that some tissue of the gums are dieing where the solution touched the gums). Now every time I brush, my gum bleed and are visibly sore red. What can I do to make them heal?
Is there any other way I can achieve whiter teeth without spending a fortune and especially casing damage to my gums or teeth?

Answer
Antonio,

The mixture you prepared has chemically burned your gums.  As long as you don't apply any more chemicals to your teeth and gums, the area should heal over in 1-2 weeks.  The gums may bleed readily and appear red until healing occurs.  It is important to keep your teeth and gums very clean during this period.  Do not shy away from cleaning them due to bleeding and discomfort.

There is no cheap, effective, and safe way to whiten the teeth.  Unfortunately, you will have to pick 2 out of the 3.

Best wishes,

Steve
