Subject: Miracle crown?

Question
Hi Dr. Siegel! I was hoping to get your opinion on something. I had a lower molar prepped for a crown three weeks ago. Since then I have had a considerable amount of pain in the tooth, on occasion radiating to my temple, 3 Advil every 5 hours or so. I made an appt today to have the tooth looked at guessing I was in for a root canal. My dentist looked at the tooth and said it looked good and that there was some signifigant gum iritatation from the temporary. He decided since my permenant crown was ready to place it. It was horrible! The pain of remvoing the temp and placing the final crown made me want to jump out of the chair (no Novacaine was given). I took three Advil right after and have been pain free for the last 8  hours which is better than the 5-6 hours Advil has bought me before. Is it possible that the temp. crown did cause all that pain and also is it strange to have pain in the temple due to a tooth? When the temp was removed I had the "lightning" pain in my left temple and when I told the denist he looked at me like I had three heads. I'm wondering if my nerve will come back from this 3 wk horror show now that the crown is on. Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

Reese

Answer
I am guessing that the temporary crown probably didn't fit very well which is why you had so much sesnsitivity and pain. Now that the permanent crown is in place you have a much better fit and seal and thus the tooth is not being exposed to the environment.  There is a good chance you will have no further discomfort and things should calm down.  I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
