Subject: aftern root canal pain

Question
I have had 2 root canals over the past week. First one was on Thursday I believe it was the #13 tooth??? next to last tooth upper left side. Then Monday, I went in for second root canal. #15 I think, last tooth in my mouth upper left side. I have no wisdom teeth. I am experiencing more pain now than I was before the root canal. My gums feel very irritated (which I understand is normal), but it feels as though there is a blister forming on the gumline around the tooth. I keep wanting to touch it with my tongue. Could this be infection? I still have some antibiotics from general dentist left, and I have pain pills, but they are only helping so much. Can I use an over counter numbing agent such as anbesol? Or will that irritate it more. I am desperate for some kind of help. My general dentist, and endontist are both on vacation until July 7th, and July 11th. What should I do for this irritating feeling?

Answer
Hi Dawn,

Sorry for the long delay in getting to your question. I have moved and can not get internet yet at my new address among other problems. Ambesol can not hurt so of course you can give it a try. Taking the antibiotics and pain pills might get you by until everyone is back from vacation. If that does not work, they should have some arrangement with other dentists to cover their emergencies.

Good luck,

Duane E. Cox, DMD
