Question i am a 39 years perio patient having had perio surgery(osseous?)a few times and for the past 15years am under good control w/no active perio disease.Six years ago I moved to FL and have a new perio. I came w/ some elongated teeth (recessed gums)due to surgery and probably over zealous brushing.Out of clear blue last Nov. I was told I need gum grafts on 4 teeth. One month at cleaning no one said anything and 2 1/2 months later at next cleaning I'm told I need gum grafts. A couple of these are more serious(?) than others due to thin tissue(?)My question is why is it necessary now;what is the downside to not doing them and why am I ok(?) one month and need gum grafts 2/12 months later. This last cleaning the hygienist said nothing to me but left a memo for the periodontist to check those teeth when she was to see me on a separate issue.FYI-I do not have sensitivity problems on those roots. Thank you for your attention to these questions. I appreciate your help.
Answer Hi Stephanie,
Recession isn't always a bad thing. When a person has a history of periodontal disease and bone loss, recession is a way to reduce the pockets and prevent or minimze bacterial colonization. Studies show that most recessions are stable over time, and they don't always get worse. My philosophy is only to correct recession surgically if:
1) the recession is progressively getting worse
2) the recession is causing a cosmetic concern
3) the recession is causing significant tooth sensitivity
4) the recession is very severe, putting the tooth in jeopardy
Unfortunately, I cannot comment on your particular situation, since I am not familiar with your unique status. But, I hope that my thoughts on this topic can help you make a better informed decision. By the way, there is nothing wrong with getting a 2nd opinion from another periodontist in your area. Having another person's input might be very valuable.
