Expert: Zev Kaufman, D.D.S. Date: 7/16/2008 Subject: Complications after extraction of wisdom teeth
Question I had my lower 2 wisdom teeth removed a little over a week ago (7/5/08). A couple days later, I'm experiencing a lot of pain towards the tooth closest to where wisdom tooth was. I visited the dentist a week after the extraction and told him about the pain and he did an x-ray. He told me the x-ray didn't show any signs of cavities but a slight infection. He increased my antibiotics and prescribed me to vicodin for the pain. Also, told me not to rinse and let it heal by itself. Neither is working. The pain is still here and doesn't seem like its going away anytime. Yesterday, I visited a different dentist in the same practice and he cleaned the tooth with some solution. And asked me to rinse as much as I can and continue taking the antibiotics. And to be patient. For the past week, including last night, I'm waking up to really intense pain on the tooth. Please help.
Answer Dear Linda:
Time to go see and oral surgeon. You might be having a condition called dry socket. It happens when the extraction site fails to heal properly. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dry-socket/DS00778 will have very concise, detailed information.
If the site is healing well and the pain can be definitely localized to the second molar (the tooth in front of the extracted one), consider surgical trauma (fracture?), but that is much less common.
Go see an oral surgeon first. www.aaoms.org will have a listing for an oral surgeon in your area.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
