Subject: My Fillings keep falling out

Question
About a year ago, I had 2 fillings put in, one on each of the very back bottom molars.  Within a couple of months, one of them fell out and had to be replaced. Then, (about 5 months after that) both of them fell out. I got one replaced yesterday, but I have the strange feeling that it is already gone, as I feel a rather unusual hole there, and it hurts more than they have in the past. So my question, is this: am I doing something wrong, that they keep falling out, or is it that I simply have an inexperienced dentist?  I asked him for an explination, and he told me he really wasn't sure why they keep falling out.

Thanks for any help you can give me!
*Kelly*

Answer
Dear Kelly:
It is difficult for me, without a proper clinical examination and X-rays to pass judgement, but restorations (fillings) when prepared properly are designed to stay in the mouth for years to come.  If a restoration keeps falling out, it means that there is a problem with the preparation technique, or choice or restorative material.  I would suggest going for a second opinion, either to another dentist or to the specialist-a Prosthodontist.
www.prosthodontics.org will have a "find a Prosthodontist in your area" link.
Good luck and best wishes,
Dr. Zev Kaufman
