Subject: Jaw Pain

Question
My father has jaw pain that shoots up through his ear to his head when he eats anything cold or hot. It also pains him when he runs his tongue across his teeth. It does not pain him any other time. He is free of pain if he does not eat anything hot or cold.  He did have a tooth filled two weeks ago.  What could this be? Could it be neuralgia? I personally don't think so, but you are the expert.

Answer
Dear Mort:  What he has is called "pulpitis", or the dental version of neuritis, but in a tooth.  The nerve is inflamed for some reason, either by bacteria or trauma.  It may be just that the bite is high on the tooth, or it may be that the nerve is infected and will need a root canal.  Good luck, dd
