Subject: Post op pain from root canal

Question
I had a root canal done about 5 weeks ago.  I had an aching pain a few days after which was corrected when my endodontist corrected my bite.  About 2 weeks after the root canal I went to my regular dentist and he put a post in. Everything was fine for a few days and then I have had a dull ache ever since (usually worse in the morning). It is sensitive to hot and cold occasionally. I am so confused because I thought this tooth was dead I wouldn't give me anymore problems.  I am getting a mouthguard as mu dentist feels I may be clenching and grinding.  Is this normal to have pain after a root canal?  Can the post be removed to see if that may be the problem?  Thanks so much.  Any info would be much appreciated. -Julie

Answer
Hi Julie,

I'm sorry to hear all this is going on. You are right. There is no way for the root canal tooth to feel hot or cold....it has to be coming from another tooth. That doesn't mean the root canal tooth may not have problems, but that's where the temperature sensitivity is coming from. Before you even think of trying to redo the root canal, I would get that evaluated. I think it would be wise to ask for a referral to an endodontist. We are specialists in diagnosing pain as well as doing root canals. Hopefully the endodontist can diagnosis your problem.

Hope this helps.
