Question I had tooth #30 removed last week after a failed crown and a failed root canal.
the tooth has been symptomatic for 20 years. After the extraction the dentist
put on a temporary bridge. This seems to be irritating the gum tissue and now I
have a dry socket which they are treating. Any advise
Answer Dear Eileen:
A dry socket is usually cased by the inability of the body to form a blood clot in the socket. It situation is usually triggered by smoking with causes constriction of the blood vessels.
Excellent, concise information is available at: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dry-socket/DS00778
As to your provisional restoration... a properly fitting provisional should look, feel, and function like the final restoration. If the provisional irritates your gums, go back to the dentist, and show him/her and ask to correct the problem. If the dentist cannot correct it, there is a good chance that the final restoration is not going to be of such great quality either. At that point consider going to another dentist, or better yet, to a Prosthodontist (the specialist in restorative, cosmetic, and implant dentistry). You already had one crown and root canal fail, you don't need anymore premature failures.
To locate a Prosthodontist go to www.prosthodontics.org.
Best wishes, and have a great weekend. I hope your dry socket heals soon.
