Subject: dental complications due to long-term antibiotic use in an immunocompromised patient

Question
Husband is a 7 year post kidney transplant recipient.  Is diabetic. 3 yrs ago had a prostate biopsy in which he acquired E.Coli infection. Now has chronic prostatis and has been on Macrobid for 3 yrs. What effect does long term AB use have on teeth?  We know this drug causes mouth sores.  Recently had to have 5 teeth pulled.  Thank you so much.

Answer
Long term AB use causes bacterial resistance to the same kind of AB used. If he need to use the same kind of AB, it will not cause effect over bacteria.

After teeth extraction he will need a combination like Clavulanic acid + amoxicilin or clindamicin
